About Us

On 22nd November 2005 I was in the cafe at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds. What did I have? I’m guessing a latte and an Eccles cake. A controversial choice in Yorkshire but I’ve never been afraid to rock the culinary boat, especially where fruit-filled pastries are concerned.

Steve (a new franchisee client) and I were there to hear business guru and franchise fan Michael Gerber speak. At the first coffee break I started with an easy opener and asked Steve how he was enjoying owning his own business. His answer:

I’ve paid a £25,000 signing on fee to leave a job I didn’t need to leave and to replace it with one I didn’t ask for and don’t want.”

Me (incisively): “Oh…ok. What’s the problem?”

Steve: “I’ m overwhelmed. I’m not in control because I don’t get the numbers. I don’t know how much money I make, I don’t know how the bank will look next week, I don’t know if I can pay the staff this month and I don’t know which suppliers I can pay. My gut feeling is I make money but is it as much as it could be? How do I compare with other franchisees? Am I paying as little tax as possible? No idea. I’m basically flying blind or at least partially sighted and that bothers me. It stresses me out and that has a knock-on effect at home. I sometimes wish I hadn’t bothered. “

Me: “Do you want that Eccles cake?”

I have found since that day that Steve’s experience is by no means unusual. Franchisors have tried and tested systems for product development, marketing and operations but there is often (not always) a gaping black hole in the manual where the numbers bit should be. That’s an odd omission given that the numbers are what determine whether the business lives or dies.

The outcome….

From 23rd November 2005 I determined that we would become experts in helping Steve and future Steves understand their numbers, get control over them and therefore the business. We would help them plan ahead, develop strategies and understand their cash flows. We would help them grow their businesses and enjoy the rewards in the most tax-efficient way possible.

About Chris

Let me tell you a story……

The story of today’s BeyondProfit begins on a very special date. I can tell you exactly when – 22nd November 2005 – and I was at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds. In the coffee shop on the 2nd floor to be exact. What did I have? Probably a latte, and an Eccles cake is a distinct possibility. A controversial choice in Yorkshire but I’ve never been afraid to rock the culinary boat, especially where fruit-filled pastries are concerned.

I had taken Steve, a new client (and our first franchisee), to hear business guru and franchise fan Michael Gerber speak. Timings and circumstances were such that I had hardly spoken to Steve before this trip, so at the first coffee break I took the opportunity to get to know him better. I started with an uncontroversial opener and asked him how he was enjoying owning his own business. His answer:

It feels like I paid a £25,000 signing on fee to leave a job I didn’t need to leave and to replace it with one I didn’t ask for and don’t want.”

Me (incisively): “Oh…ok. What’s the problem?”

Steve (I’m paraphrasing here): “I feel overwhelmed. I don’t feel in control of things because I don’t have a complete grasp of the numbers. There’s nothing about financial stuff in the manual so I spend a massive amount of time basically trying to figure it all out. I don’t know how much money I make, I don’t know what the bank will look like in two weeks’ time, I don’t know whether I can pay the staff this month and I don’t know whether I can pay the suppliers on time.

Steve looked thoroughly depressed and upset (although as we were two men in a public space open displays of emotion were neither seemly nor acceptable). Franchising is the world’s most successful business format – what was going wrong?

I have found since that day that Steve’s experience is by no means unusual. Franchisors have tried and tested systems for product development, marketing and operations but there is often (not always) a gaping black hole in the manual where the numbers bit should be. That’s an odd omission given that the numbers are what determine whether the business lives or dies.

The outcome….

From 23rd November 2005 I determined that we would become experts in helping Steve and future Steves (and Carols – we are an equal opportunities accountant) understand their numbers, get control over them and therefore the business. We would help them plan ahead, develop strategies and understand their cash flows. We would help them grow their businesses and enjoy the rewards in the most tax-efficient way possible.

We want franchise owners to enjoy their businesses and for those businesses to deliver the wealth risk-taking franchisees so richly deserve.

It wasn’t always easy for Steve, but we got there and over 10 years and a succession of unsuitable eastern European spouses later he is still going strong and owns multiple franchises in three successful brands together with a small stable of independent businesses. We had nothing to do with the marriage bit – that was all his own work.

HOW WE WORK

We help franchisees like you build better businesses. We do that by helping you really get to grip with the numbers and what they are telling you. In order that we can do that, we use a simple 4-stage process.

STAGE 1 – Where You Are Now

Although our medical knowledge begins and ends with Holby City, what we do know is that treatment without diagnosis = malpractice. The first thing we’ll do therefore is help you figure out exactly what’s going on in your business – what profit it’s making, where that profit is coming from, what the important trends are and what things you should be monitoring and measuring.

STAGE 2 – Where You Want To Be

You may be sick of hearing us going on about it by now, but really great businesses know where they are going. We’ll help you think about what it is you want for yourself and your family and what the business needs to do to get you there.

STAGE 3 – Getting From Here To There

Knowing where you want to go is wonderful, but you’ll need a map to help you get there. We’ll help you create a simple plan, with an equally simple system for measuring and monitoring progress towards your goals. We’ll be in regular contact to make sure you stay on track.

STAGE 4 – Keeping More Of It

It’s all very well growing your business and making some real money, but HM Treasury is always lurking, always watching. We’ll ensure the taxman’s sticky fingers take as little as possible of your hard-earned money so you and your family keep as much as possible for yourselves.
